how old should a baby be for overnight access at father's?

Hi,

I have a nearly 6 month old daughter. I am not together with her father. We were friends previously but now that he has a new girlfriend this tends to be his priority. I've moved places (about hour and a quarter away) for support off my family. For the first three months he saw very little of our daughter, unless i took her to his for a couple of hours, sometimes weeks apart. After an argument over this he has seen her more, at first a couple of hours here, then up to 4 and then 8, at his house.(every other weekend) He is wanting to have her for the weekend and originally i thought this would be ok by now, but she is still partially breast fed and i worry that she is too young for an overnight stay when she has not really spent a great deal of time with him. What age should she stay overnight?

I'm not sure I know the

I'm not sure I know the answer as my children were toddlers when me and their dad split up.  I suppose if she's still breast feeding then that's an issue?!  But aside from that I suppose what's concerning you is that she's spending tiem with someone who's not that familiar?  Well that's true, but babies kearn faces and people very quickly and so I expect she'd know he was dad?  And she knows that he's OK becuase you've taken her to see him and so taught her that he's a friend and not a stranger.  He's also steped up to the mark when you ticked him off about not seeing her - he came good, so well done him - and well done you for rasing the issue and sorting it out for your daughter as she'll be the one to suffer if he leaves her life. I know I'm generally more relaxed than msot mothers and I've not been in your situation to know how I'd react, but I as long as you sort breast feeding out then I don;t see why she can't stay?  Her dad will be a bity of a learner so you'll need to tell him all about her routine, what you do if she cries, what way she reall y likes to be held etc  music at bedtime she likes (or whatever bedtime routine she likes best) and then leave him too it.  They'll both be learning about each other, but they both love each other and they'll bond and get to know each other properly like father and daughter should.  I think it's important to remember that a child's mother AND father are probably the 2 best people in the world to look after the child as neither will want any harm to come to them and both will look after them with love.  Good luck Emily
