Even 12 year olds will have to have car seats from 18th sept

I just read this in the paper and it came as a surprise to me - so thought it might be a surprise to others too... From 18th sept children under the age of 12 YEARS have to be in a booster seat in a car (any car except a taxi) or you can be fined £30, or £500 if you get taken to court! How typical that I've jsut chucked out my children's old booster seats!! How did this new law escape my notice??

Have been into halfords and discovered that there's a height limit (135cms I think). Luckily my 2 are just over it so no need for the booster seat, even though both under 12. They recommended that I bought one in case i gave a lift to a shorter friend.

and you know what - the worst of it is going to be convincing my 'grown up' 8 and 9 year olds that its not babyish being back in a booster seat! Not sure the threat of mother in clink's going to carry much weight either - think they'd view that as a plus!

I know what you mean - I just happened to be buying a new car seat for my 5 year old and noticed that there are signs all over Mothercare! I was told that I didn't just need a booster seat but an "age, height and weight relevant child restraint" that was required. This has now resulted in me purchasing TWO car seats, one for my 8 year old son as well. Apparently not all car seats fit all cars so I expect I'll be off there again when I change cars!!!!
