Email to friendImagine – you’re young free and single again and thinking that it would be fun to get out and about. There’s a lot to do and see, people to meet, and adventures to have. However, I didn’t feel as street wise as I used to so, keen to start playing again, I sought advice from fun-loving, single girls who were always out and about – what do they do to keep safe? Here are their Top Tips – thanks girls!
Never, ever, ever use an illegal cab.
Ask the cab driver, or person giving you the lift home, to wait until you’re in your house. One of my friends was mugged after the cab drove off.
Always walk purposefully.
Never look people in the eye, or meet their gaze. Don’t keep your head down though – make sure you know where everyone is around you.
If it’s a quiet road, walk down the middle of it.
Never, ever, ever use your mobile phone in the street.
If you sense trouble pretend to check the time on your watch, pretend you’re late, and run.
If you know people are about to mug you, act mad. One of my friends pretended to be an aeroplane and ‘flew’ in great zig zags down the street singing! Her potential attackers fled.
Keep your keys and phone in your pocket, separate from your handbag, so that if it’s snatched you’ll always be able to call for help and get into your house.
Hold your keys in your hand with the sharp end sticking out so that you can use it to scratch an attacker
Take your drink to the loos with you to make sure it isn’t spiked while you’re away.
Make sure you know who buys your drinks
Don’t wear your hair up in a ponytail (especially if you need to walk past bushes on your way home) as grabbing you by the ponytail and pulling you backwards is one of the most effective ways of getting you into bushes, alleyways etc.
NOW GO AND HAVE SOME FUN!
